New Si suppliers enter US market

The US imported 106,026 mt of 99-99.99% Si metal in the first 10 months of 2017 vs. 110,042 mt in the same 2016 period. October 2017 imports were 11,537 mt vs. 6,663 mt in October 2016.

The major suppliers in the first 10 months of 2017 (same 2016 period in parentheses) were: Brazil, 46,500 mt (42,410 mt); Canada, 19,208 mt (15,829 mt); Australia, 17,458 mt (14,472 mt); and Kazakhstan, 8,245 mt (7,219mt).

Bosnia supplied 2,650 mt in the first 10 months of 2017 and 1,102 mt in October vs. 83 mt for all of 2016, while Thailand saw its share increase to 4,876 mt in the first 10 months of 2017 including 994 mt in October vs. 576 mt for all of 2016.

US imports of less than 99% silicon were 24,235 mt in the first 10 months of 2017 vs. 18,750 mt in the same 2016 period. October 2017 imports were 1,700 mt v. 1,259 mt in October 2016.

The major suppliers in the first 10 months of 2017 (same 2016 period in parentheses) were: Brazil, 12,046 mt (6,050 mt); Norway, 5,699 m t (5,926 mt); Australia, 1,560 mt (144 mt); and Kazakhstan, 1,252 mt (764 mt).
