US imports of high-, medium- and low-carbon FeMn, up up and away

The US imported 170,672 mt of high-carbon ferromanganese in the first 10 months of 2017 vs. 107,903 mt in the same 2016 period, a 37% increase. October 2017 shipments were 24,934 mt vs. 4,852 mt in October 2016.

The major suppliers in the first 10 months of 2017 (same 2016 period in parentheses) were: South Africa, 56,288 mt (34,973 mt); Australia, 51,514 mt (43,697 mt); Spain, 17,636 mt (312 mt); and Ukraine, 14,038 mt (8,314 mt).

In the first 10 months of 2017, in addition to a sizeable increase from Spain, Saudi Arabia supplied 5,460 mt vs. zero in all of 2016, while Malaysia supplied 8,876 mt vs. zero.

US imports of medium-carbon ferromanganese were 55,758 mt in the first 10 months of 2017 and 6,587 mt in October vs. 52,906 mt and 1,911 mt, respectively, in the same 2016 periods.

The major suppliers in the first 10 months of 2017 (same 2016 period in parentheses) were: Norway, 18,550 mt (5,143 mt); South Africa, 17,145 mt (7,176 mt); Korea, 16,897 mt (25,267 mt); and Mexico, 2,718 mt (7,852 mt). In the first 10 months of 2016, Australia supplied 6,858 mt vs. zero in the same 2017 period.

The US imported 48,798 mt of low-carbon ferromanganese in the first 10 months of 2017 and 5,859 mt in October 2017 vs. 37,150 mt and 3,743 mt, respectively, in the same 2016 periods an increase of nearly 25%.

The major suppliers in the first 10 months of 2017 (same 2016 period in parentheses) were: Norway, 27,071 mt (24,472 mt); China, 7,885 mt (8,555 mt); Korea, 7,798 mt (2,350 mt); and France, 3,300 mt (zero).
