Reader comment on new US duty on imports of Chinese silicones

Your entry about duties on Chinese silicone products entering the US had some interesting comments from analysts”.  1) Dow will mint money and send a lifeline to Momentive (this implies that Momentive is not producing siloxane or other intermediates in Waterford) and 2) will hurt Elkem as most operations are in China (Elkem operates downstream silicone plant in South Carolina and presumably inputs have been coming from China).

A few weeks ago there was an entry stating that Elkem would have to shift around where South Carolina plant receives inputs should the duties be imposed on Chinese silicones. This entry said that Elkem would need to shift source from China to France.

I think the duties on Chinese silicones entering the US stand to hurt much greater the numerous small, specialty silicone companies located across the US than Momentive or Elkem.
