South Africa’s loss was India’s gain in Chinese ferrochrome

Chinese imports of charge chrome and high-carbon ferrochrome were 2,243,283 mt in the first ten months of 2017, down slightly (0.9%) from 2,264,475 mt in the same 2016 period. In October, imports were 224,432 mt, down 8.2% from September month-on-month (MoM) but up 63.2% year-on-year (YoY).

The major suppliers in the first ten months of 2017 were: South Africa, 1,231,045 mt, down 17.6% YoY; Kazakhstan, 482,223 mt, down 12.8% YoY; India, 298,569 mt, up 179.1% YoY; Zimbabwe, 81,845 mt, up 57.1% YoY; Russia, 50,379 mt, up 570.1% YoY; Oman, 45,065 mt, up 74.5% YoY; and all others, 48,148 mt, up 103.5% YoY, including Vietnam, 1,630 mt, Zambia, 1,566 mt, and Albania, 499 mt.

In October, the major suppliers were: South Africa, 122,691 mt, down 1.1% MoM but up 83.1% YoY; Kazakhstan, 47,194 mt, down 34.8% MoM and down 12.2% YoY; India, 33,093 mt, up 31.5% MoM and up 502.8% YoY; and Zimbabwe, 9,118 mt, down 40.6% MoM but up 66.4% YoY.
