China importing record amounts of chrome ore

There is NO shortage of chrome ore in China. In October, China imported 1,462,611 mt, up 9.9% month-on-month (MoM) and up 53.1% year-on-year (YoY). In the first ten months of 2017, Chinese imports were 11,367,901 mt, up 38.4% YoY (8,216,549 mt).

The major suppliers in the first ten months of 2017 were: South Africa, 8,205,981 mt, up 34.8% YoY (so much for withholding shipments in order to get higher prices); Turkey, 972,950 mt, up 67.8%; Albania, 408,155 mt, up 1.2%; Zimbabwe, 349,730 mt, up 2,269.1%; Oman, 322,473 mt, up 136.7%); Pakistan, 281,973 mt up 33.1%; and Iran, 233,660 mt, down 33.3%.

For September, the major importers were: South Africa, 1,100,555 mt, up 15.4% MoM and up 48.6% YoY; and Turkey, 155,528 mt, up 27.1% MoM and up 178.6% YoY.
