HiTest’s first public hearing on proposed Si smelter

It was a packed house at HiTest Silicon’s open meeting last night about the company’s proposed silicon smelter. Those opposed to the Newport, WA, smelter cited traffic, pollution, and lower property values while company representatives said the plant wouldn’t be built until it passes rigorous state, federal and local review. And, it would take at least six to 12 months of permitting.

This was not a public hearing. It was poorly-designed public relations forum put on by Hi-Test and Pend Oreille County Commissioners.

This HiTest Public forum was a joke and a slap in the face of the people who attended, which the vast majority of over 600+ were anti-smelter. It was not planned out with an agenda or a working speaker system or a screen that was visible to all. It was poorly run and to have our state officials from Olympia sitting at the same table with HiTest helping them answer questions HiTest was not capable of answering was another slap in the face. It was an attempt, but it was a farce and everyone there knew it.
