I have never been a big supporter of the EU. While the goals are lofty, I think the institution is fatally flawed. There is no better example of this that the agony over whether the EU would sign a free trade agreement with Canada. While all the countries approved, the French speaking region in Belgium, Wallonia, and veto power over the Belgium national government and de facto control over the entire EU which required unanimous approval of the pact.
The region, one of five, was pressured and bribed into approving the deal, but it exposed the EU problem in making hard decisions. Just too many moving parts and lots of talk but little action.
