What’s going on here?

With all the bullish talk in the ferroalloys industry, I thought I would go to the video tape, i.e., AISI statistics, to see how strong the US steel industry is.

The group reported that in the week ended Oct. 22, 2016, domestic raw steel production was 1,597,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 67.3, or down 2% from the same 2015 period when production was 1,629,000 net tons in while the capability utilization was 68.1%. Production for the week ended October 22, 2016 is up 0.4% from the previous week  when production was 1,590,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 67%. Adjusted year-to-date production through Oct. 22, 2016 was 71,950,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 71.5%. That is down 1.9% from the 73,322,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 71.7%.
