Logistics seems to be behind the surge in South African manganese ore prices which saw them increase to $5.50-5.75 per mtu for 44% grade and just under $5 for 36-38% Mn, c.i.f. China. It seems that Transnet can’t fix the tracks from the Kalahari and being a parastatal no one knows when it will happen. However, at the current prices, it is now becomes economical to start trucking the ore to the ports. Also, all new entrants are ramping up their ore output so the artificial deficit could turn into a surplus quickly.
