I once worked with a person who NEVER was in the office. We never knew what he did, but he was in constant motion. We all assume he was doing great, getting new business, meeting with people to gather ideas, etc. I once asked him why he traveled so much and his reply was: “when in trouble travel. If you are hanging around the office people saw you and expected you to do things, got assigned jobs, and exposed yourself to risk.” His solution was simple, stay out of the office.
After running up the largest expense account in the company’s history, someone decided to pull the plug on him. However, it was the company’s policy to do it in person, which was impossible if the person never came into the office.
It was finally accomplished by cutting off his company credit card and forcing him to return. He was a hero.
